When Kahlean walked into Mission Animal Hospital early one morning, she was carrying more than just her cat—she was carrying fear, heartbreak, and the weight of a decision no pet parent should ever have to make.

Her cat, B, had been showing troubling signs for weeks: prolonged heat cycles, lethargy, and discharge. The day before, Kahlean had rushed her to an urgent veterinary clinic, where the diagnosis was confirmed—pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection that affects unspayed female cats and dogs.If left untreated, pyometra can lead to sepsis, kidney failure, toxic shock, or even peritonitis—a fatal abdominal infection.
B needed surgery. But the cost of care elsewhere was overwhelming, and Kahlean was left with no clear path forward.
When she arrived at Mission Animal Hospital, the lobby was full and the schedule was tight, but thankfully we were able to get her in.
B was quickly admitted and prepped for surgery. It was a major procedure. Our veterinary team worked swiftly and skillfully to remove the infected tissue and stabilize her condition and B was able to go home the same day
The next day, our medical team called to see how B was recovering, Kahlean shared that she seemed to be having trouble breathing. We encouraged her to bring B in immediately. With an adjustment to her medication, B was back on the path to healing. Thankfully, it wasn’t a surgical complication—just pain that needed better management. We adjusted her medication, and soon, B was back on the path to healing.
Today, B is doing amazingly well. She’s eating, resting comfortably, and slowly returning to her curious, affectionate self. Kahlean says she’s beyond grateful—not just for the medical care, but for the kindness, flexibility, and support she received every step of the way.
Kahlean’s story is a reminder of what compassion can do. It’s why we’re here. And it’s why we’ll always say yes when it matters the most.
