National Walk Your Dog Month

January is National Walk Your Dog Month! Though it might be one of the coldest months of the year in Minnesota, it’s a great time to get outside and get moving with your pup! Many make New Year’s Resolutions to get more active, and dog walking is a perfect way to do that!

As veterinarians, we often stress the benefits walks have for dogs. Walks with your companion offer more than just a chance to do their business. Your dog needs exercise and mental stimulation to live a happy and healthy life. Regular walks also help keep your dog’s joints healthy, regulate the digestive tract, and prevent bladder infections for your dog.

Studies show that dog walking also has immense benefits for people. It can improve your fitness, lower blood pressure, and decrease stress! Over time, it strengthens muscles and bones. It also increases happiness for both you and your dog. It can strengthen your bond by spending one-on-one time together and providing quality attention for your dog.

Dog walking even changes how other people see you! Studies show that dog walkers are perceived as friendly and approachable. Walking your dog allows you to meet others in your neighborhood, which benefits the whole community.

Here at Mission Animal Hospital, we know how much you love your dogs, and consider them family. Walking your dog is a great way to keep your pet happy and healthy, hopefully preventing future vet visits, all while strengthening your bond with them. Get outside this January and walk your dog, and see all these benefits for yourself!
