High Quality and High Volume Spay/Neuter Surgical Preparation Volunteer (Skilled Vet Students/Vet Tech Students Only!)

About the Role

Mission Animal Hospital is proud to offer a High Quality, High Volume Spay/Neuter program to our Rescue Partners. We are looking for a skilled volunteer to assist with surgical preparation during a High Quality High Volume Spay/Neuter event. This opportunity will give you direct exposure to the fast paced and energetic world of high volume spays and neuters - and the direct benefit it has in reducing the homeless pet population in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro Area.

Schedule

    - This volunteer opportunity is available approximately once monthly (frequency may increase or decrease depending on demand)
    - Volunteer shifts will assist our staff veterinary care team for an 8 hour shift, generally 7:30am-3:30pm
    - This position will normally be scheduled on Mondays (subject to change based on clinic schedule)

Tasks

    On-site training and supervision will be provided

    - Manage efficiency and flow of patients from the intubation table into the operating room
    - Administer pre-operative sedation, pain management and induction medications to patients by SQ, IM or IV injection (based on skill and comfort level)
    - Monitor patients after pre-operative sedation and induction has been administered
    - Record patient data and monitoring information
    - Assist and/or perform patient intubation (based on skill and comfort level)
    - Assist and/or perform blood draws (based on skill and comfort level)
    - Surgical site preparation, including shaving of the abdominal area and pre-surgical scrub

Qualifications

    - Must be 18 years of age or older
    - Formal or informal veterinary field training; current enrollment in Veterinary or Veterinary Technical curriculum preferred
    -Developed communication skills, professionalism, and ability to collaborate with a team
    - Ability to multi-task and work effectively with competing priorities
    - Ability to remain composed under pressure in a fast-paced environment
    - Ability to learn and respond appropriately to pet behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)
    - Ability to communicate basic patient care concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian
    - Ideal candidate would be actively seeking a long term career in the veterinary field

Physical Requirements

    - Must be able to lift over 50 pounds
    - Must be able to stand for long periods of time, and bend and kneel repeatedly
