High Quality and High Volume Spay/Neuter Post-Operative Recovery & Treatments Volunteer (Skilled Vet Students and Vet Tech Students only)

About the Role

Mission Animal Hospital is proud to offer a High Quality, High Volume Spay/Neuter program to our Rescue Partners. We are looking for a skilled volunteer to assist with post-operative patient recovery and treatments during a High Quality High Volume Spay/Neuter event. This opportunity will give you direct exposure to the fast paced and energetic world of high volume spays and neuters - and the direct benefit it has in reducing the homeless pet population in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro Area.

Schedule

    - This volunteer opportunity is available approximately once monthly (frequency may increase or decrease depending on demand)
    - Volunteer shifts will assist our staff veterinary care team for a 4 hour shift, generally 1:30pm-5:30pm
    - This position will normally be scheduled on Mondays (subject to change based on clinic schedule).

Tasks

    - On-site training and supervision will be provided.
    - Manage efficiency and flow of patients from the operating table into recovery
    - Monitor patients throughout the anesthetic recovery period
    - Record patient data and monitoring information
    - Fill and administer appropriate post-operative medications
    - Prepare and administer vaccines
    - Assist and/or perform blood draws and SQ or IM injections (based on skill and comfort level)
    - Perform and record results for common diagnostic tests
    - Engage clients in phone communication regarding patient post-op care and recovery
    - Assist with end of day clean-up & task lists, which may include:
    - Perform laundry and maintain cleanliness and organization of the laundry room
    - Clean and sanitize surgical instruments and other medical instruments in accordance with standardized protocols
    - Organize and pack surgical instruments, wrap surgery packs for sterilization

Qualifications

    - Must be 18 years of age or older
    - Formal or informal veterinary field training; current enrollment in Veterinary or Veterinary Technical curriculum preferred
    - Developed communication skills, professionalism, and ability to collaborate with a team
    - Ability to multi-task and work effectively with competing priorities
    - Ability to remain composed under pressure in a fast-paced environment
    - Ability to learn and respond appropriately to pet behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)
    - Ability to communicate basic patient care concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian
    - Ideal candidate would be actively seeking a long term career in the veterinary field

Physical Requirements

    - Must be able to lift over 50 pounds
    - Must be able to stand for long periods of time, and bend and kneel repeatedly
