About Us

Mission Animal Hospital is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The guiding mission of our work is to provide high-quality and compassionate veterinary care for pet owners in need. Our programs aim to protect the incredible human-pet bond. The Mission team has years of experience in the care and treatment of pets. We come from shelter backgrounds, private practice backgrounds, and academic backgrounds. We are bound together by the common goal and determination to support you in maintaining the best possible veterinary care for your family pets. We passionately strive to diagnose and treat a multitude of symptoms in an efficient, respectful, and humane manner.

Our Team

Every member of the Mission team is dedicated to maintaining the human-pet bond, giving them a special sensitivity to financial challenges some families face in caring for their pets. These professionals understand that our pets are important to us and deserve to be treated like cherished members of our family.

Dr. Susan

Executive Director

Dr. Susan purchased Mission Animal Hospital in 2014 and changed it from a for-profit to a nonprofit organization. She is committed to carrying on the founding promise of quality veterinary care for all who seek it.Dr. Susan came to Mission after a number of years in private practice. During her time in private practice, she was profoundly impacted by the number of people and families struggling to care for their beloved pets. Susan believes client education and sound medical care along with patience and respect are cornerstones to providing a good veterinary experience. To that end, Susan is passionate about providing compassionate, reasonable and quality care for all pets.Dr. Susan’s specific areas of interest are surgery, dermatology, preventive and geriatric care. She is a University of Minnesota College of Veterinary medicine graduate. Dr. Susan highly values continuing education and places a high priority on staying current with new therapies, medications and procedures.Dr. Susan volunteers with Worldvets, helping with surgical clinics in countries with limited veterinary care. She volunteers and teaches with the University of Minnesota student spay and neuter clinics (SIRVS) that offers Veterinary care to underserved communities in northern Minnesota. She also is actively involved in the University of Minnesota student travel grant selections and enjoys mentoring veterinary students.When she has some spare time, Dr. Susan loves to travel, cook, walk the lakes, visit the dog park and binge watch TV series. She is Mom to twin boys and pack leader to 4 dogs.

Dr. Kelsey

Clinical Director

Dr. Kelsey received her Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Environmental Policy from Northwestern University. A Minnesotan through and through, she returned to pursue her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota. She also holds a Certificate in Shelter Medicine from the University of Florida. She strongly believes that the human-animal bond is the foundation of both responsible pet ownership and veterinary medicine. Her special interests include geriatric care, preventative medicine, surgery, nutrition, and metabolic disease. Dr. Kelsey is committed to maintaining open communication with Mission clients in order to provide the best care possible for their furry family members. Dr. Kelsey and her husband, Andrew, are the proud parents of a bossy cat, named Polly, as well two sweet dogs, named Luna & Phoebe. In her spare time, Dr. Kelsey enjoys hiking, backpacking, exercising, and traveling.

Dr. Charlotte

Veterinarian

Dr. Charlotte graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and then received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2002. After graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Charlotte completed a year long internship at a specialty and emergency hospital in Michigan and then worked for many years as an emergency veterinarian in the Twin Cities. Dr Charlotte also worked at a veterinary poison control center for many years and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology in 2017. Dr Charlotte enjoys the daily variety of veterinary medicine but has a special interest in toxicology, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. She is proud to have joined the hardworking and compassionate team at Mission Animal Hospital and to be able to provide high quality health care to everyone. When not at work, Dr. Charlotte enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her family. She has two cats, Asti and Hanklin, and a high energy Aussie-coonhound mix named Finny.   

Dr. Hadley

Board-Certified Surgeon

Dr. Hadley was born and raised in Duluth and studied biology and psychology at UMD. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota, then pursued advanced training via general and surgical internships in Colorado. With a passion for surgery, Dr. Hadley went on to complete a surgical residency at Michigan State University. Following a rigorous examination process, she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (or a board-certified veterinary surgeon) in 2013. Dr. Hadley returned home to Minnesota and spent 5 years honing her surgical skills in specialty/referral practice. She joined the Mission team in 2018 with hopes of expanding the reach of her skills by making expert surgical care more accessible to pets in need. When away from the hospital, Dr. Hadley cherishes time with her husband and daughter. They love to travel and any activity involving family, friends, hiking, a lake, or the mountains. Dr. Hadley also enjoys snuggling her furry, four-footed children that have been adopted from her adventures around the country (a miniature Dachshund from Minnesota, a kitty from Colorado, and a Coonhound from Michigan).

Dr. Illaina

Veterinarian

Dr. Illaina received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State University in 2008.  Upon graduation, she was employed as a mixed animal veterinarian in western Maryland for two years.  Her career then led her to Minnesota where she has been a small animal practitioner ever since. Dr. Illaina is passionate about the human-animal bond, and helping families and individuals care for their furry loved ones.  She is proud to belong to the team at Mission Animal Hospital, which provides quality affordable pet care and resources to help owners.  What Dr. Illaina most enjoys about being a veterinarian is the daily variety and tackling challenging problems. On her days off, Dr. Illaina enjoys time with her two cats, outdoor recreation, traveling, and crafting.

Dr. Lindsey

Veterinarian

Dr. Lindsey graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2018 after working for several years as a vet tech at a humane society in Michigan where she found her passion for strengthening the human-pet bond. After graduation she worked for a small animal practice and gained a strong interest in preventative care, internal medicine, and behavior. Dr. Lindsey is also currently completing her Master's in Public Health and tries to reinforce the importance of population medicine into daily practice. There are so many aspects of veterinary medicine and she's excited to continue exploring at Mission! Dr. Lindsey is honored to join the Mission family because of the high quality, affordable, patient-centered care that is provided on a daily basis by the dedicated and compassionate team. Her passions outside of Mission include reading, discovering new music, traveling, and getting outdoors with her two dogs (Lennon and Winston) and partner (Joel).

Dr. Nellie

Veterinarian

Dr. Nellie grew up in the Twin Cities and graduated from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in 2013. She is a Minnesotan through and through. Before coming to Mission, Dr. Nellie worked in small animal practice, research, and as a shelter veterinarian. She is very happy to be a part of the Mission family where she can provide accessible medical care for all patients.

Her specific interests include: surgery, high quality/high volume spay/neuter, dentistry, internal medicine and preventative care.
In her spare time she enjoys working out at Orange Theory Fitness, fostering dogs and cats and spending time with her daughter Paisley, husband, black lab Gunner, and two senior cats - Sydney and Sadie. 

Dr. Tara

Veterinarian

Dr. Tara obtained a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology from Northern State University in 2011. She then went on to attend the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and obtained her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in May 2015. She is thrilled to be able to be a part of the Mission family and provide high quality health care at an affordable cost while supporting and educating clients on how to best advocate for their animals. Her special interests include internal medicine, small animal dentistry and clinical nutrition. Dr. Tara has 4 furry children at home that keep her very busy; a black lab named Maggie, a sheltie named Shelley and two rambunctious cats, Knox and Luna. In her spare time, she loves to play soccer, read and spend time up at her family's lake cabin.
 

Marcy

Operations Manager

Marcy comes from the Duluth/Superior area where she managed a six doctor animal hospital and was Treasurer on the BOD for the Douglas County Humane Society. She is very passionate about animal health care and welfare and is truly inspired by Mission's values and honored to be part of the team as the Practice Manager. She is a dedicated dog Mom to her lab/shepherd mix named Buddy and her cat Lacey. In her spare time Marcy loves to spend time with her daughter Alex, her husband Brett, and many other members of their families that reside in and around the Twin Cities and the Moose Lake area.

Dr. Alaina

Veterinarian

Dr. Alaina grew up in St. Paul and attended St. Kate's University where she received a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Soon after, she moved to a the Caribbean island of Grenada and attended St. George's University. There, she obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. During her final year of veterinary school she completed clinical rotations at the University of Minnesota. Previous to Mission Animal Hospital, she completed a one year rotating internship in small animal surgery and medicine at Blue Pearl Specialty and Emergency Hospital in New York City. Dr. Alaina enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine but has a strong interest in emergency and critical care. In her spare time she enjoys taking her cat Taco traveling and exploring new places. Taco is a well-traveled cat who has been to multiple states and countries. When not traveling or at the hospital she can often be found in the kitchen trying out new baking recipes.

Dr. Heatheranne

Veterinarian

Dr. Heatheranne grew up in Central California and attended San Francisco State University to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Zoology and a minor in Dance. She then moved to the small Caribbean Island of Grenada to attend St. George’s University to obtain her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2020. During her last year of veterinary school, she moved to Minnesota to finish her clinical rotations at the University of Minnesota. Her and her husband enjoyed Minnesota, even the winters, so they decided to stay in the Midwest to call Minnesota their new home. Dr. Heatheranne loves all aspects of veterinary medicine, but has special interest in preventative medicine, nutrition and dermatology. She is very excited to work at Mission to provide affordable vet care and maintain the human animal bond with clients. In her spare time, she loves to go camping, hiking and exploring Minnesota with her husband and dachshund named Porter. 

Dr. Katherine

Veterinarian

Dr. Katherine grew up in a Navy family in Maryland. She always had an interest in animals and was an avid horseback rider. She obtained her Bachelor of Animal Science from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2004. She then went on to obtain her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2009. Upon graduation, she moved to Las Vegas and practiced small animal medicine. While she enjoyed living in Vegas, she and her husband decided to move to Minnesota in 2014 to be closer to family. She joined Mission Animal Hospital in 2017 with the hope of finally being able to offer high quality medicine to all clients. Her specific interest is in surgery and becoming skilled in more advanced surgical procedures. In her time off, Dr Katherine enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter. They love hiking and finding new things to do in the Twin Cities. Her favorite dog breeds are French Bulldog and Pit Bull. She is a also a huge fan of bull riding, rodeo, the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Eagles.

Dr. Maura

Veterinarian

Dr. Maura is originally from Vermont and graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor’s degree in biology and Spanish. She attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, she completed a year-long internship at a specialty and emergency referral hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Maura practiced medicine in Connecticut before moving to Minnesota. She enjoys working with dogs, cats, and small mammals. Her specific interests include surgery, emergency, dentistry, and preventative medicine. Dr. Maura is a USDA accredited veterinarian and strives to provide high-quality medicine for the Spanish speaking community. When not at Mission Animal Hospital, Dr. Maura enjoys traveling, exploring the Twin Cities, hiking, running, and spending time with her family and a black cat named Lila.

Dr. Sonja

Veterinarian

Dr. Sonja joined our staff in 2016. After a previous career in marketing, she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Upon graduation, she completed a year-long internship at a specialty and emergency referral hospital in Chicago. After returning to Minnesota, she worked at a general practice and an emergency clinic before joining the Mission team. She enjoys helping pet owners make informed decisions to benefit the health and well-being of their animal companions with a focus on education and collaboration. Dr. Sonja enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine especially preventative care, internal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine. When not at work, she spends her time with her family, including two dogs, enjoying the city parks, finding new restaurants and getting away to the family lake cabin.

Christine

Director of Development

Christine Durand is a lifelong Minnesotan who comes to Mission from variety of posts in nonprofits around the Twin Cities, where she has enjoyed creating a healthy, more engaged community for us all to live, work, and play. She has many passions and has served in leadership positions at the Minnesota Environmental Partnership, Planned Parenthood of MN, SD, ND, and the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, most recently as the Director of Advancement with the Minnesota Museum of American Art. She has a B.A. in Journalism from Drake University and an M.P.A. in Public and Nonprofit Leadership from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She is devoted to the human-animal bond, and has an appreciation for building relationships with pet owners and their furry family members. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband and two rescue pups, Ziva and Arya.

Kellie

Human Resources Manager

Kellie comes to Mission from Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa, where she managed recruitment and human resources. Born and raised in the Minneapolis community, she currently owns Greater Goods, a small card and gift shop dedicated to introducing new artists to the retail marketplace. Kellie holds a Certified Professional certification from the Society for Human Resource Management, as well as a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in Drama from Washington University in Saint Louis. Outside of work, Kellie spends her time with her two cats, Iris and Indigo, and makes wood mosaic art under the name Moonlit Forest Art. She also enjoys reading fiction, writing fantasy, and obstacle racing (to the despair of her knees).
