Annual Wellness Visits

November, 2017 Newsletter
Yearly wellness visits are recommended for all dogs and cats. Your veterinarian at Mission Animal Hospital will review their medical history to help give a clear picture of his health. Perform a full physical exam and detailed notes from this visit will be maintained in your pet’s file for future reference. In addition to the physical exam, other concerns may be discussed to help ensure long-term wellness. These may include:
  • Vaccinations
  • Food choices
  • Weight management
  • Parasite control products - flea, tick, heartworm, intestinal parasites
  • Behavioral training
For pets over the age of 6, annual bloodwork screening tests may be recommended. We plan for these tests to be normal but if not, then these allow your pet’s veterinarian to find possible early signs of illness that can be addressed sooner rather than later.
WELLNESS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOGS
For dogs, the recommended vaccine schedule is as follows:
  • DA2PP (Distemper combo) - this vaccine will be due every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks then boostered at 1 year, then once every 3 years ongoing.
  • Rabies - this vaccine is started at 16 weeks, then 1 year booster, then once every 3 years ongoing
  • Leptospirosis - this vaccine is started at 12 weeks, boostered 3-4 weeks later then continued once a year ongoing.
  • Elective: Bordetella (Kennel Cough) - this vaccine is started at 8 weeks, then boostered 4 weeks later, then once a year ongoing.
  • Elective: this vaccine is started at 12 weeks, boostered 3-4 weeks later then continued once a year ongoing.

Flea/tick preventative is recommended for all dogs seasonally. We recommend an oral product called Simparica once a month at least April through October - spring through late fall.

Heartworm and intestinal parasite preventative is recommended year-round. We have two options - either Heartgard and oral tablet given once a month year round for heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention. Or Proheart and injection given once every 6 months along with a monthly oral dewormer for intestinal parasites.

Heartworm tests are needed once a year to continue on preventative. If your pet were to become infected with heartworms, the preventative can be harmful, so we recommend testing once a year ongoing in addition to year-round preventative.
WELLNESS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CATS
For cat’s the RECOMMENDED VACCINE SCHEDULE:
  • FVRCP (Distempter Combo) - this vaccine is due every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks then once a year ongoing.
  • Rabies - this vaccine will be due at 16 weeks of age (in 10 weeks), then once a year ongoing.
  • Feline Leukemia - this vaccine will be due at 12 weeks of age and need one booster at 16 weeks. This is continued in outdoor cats once a year ongoing.

We recommend AdvantageMulti or Revolution (flea/tick/heartworm/ear mite preventative) monthly year round, or at least April through October.
